Every now and then there are just nights when you can’t sleep. the usual reasons for insomnia are not applying: you did not drink caffeine, you are not upset or anxious, you are healthy, you are physically comfortable, your partner is being good and not snoring, etc. – and yet, you can’t sleep. Your brain is just wired for whatever reason and won’t shut down.
I had one of those nights last night. Yesterday me and my fiance did a lot of brainstorming about our wedding coming up in March and some business ideas for me. I have a lot going on in my life (mostly good things) and I am excited. Usually I put in such a full day that I have no problem going to sleep. Not last night.
I suppose I could have meditated and worked harder at slowing my mind down but the truth is I was enjoying thinking about all of these wonderful things I am planning for my life. The result: not a lot of sleep.
I am fortunate today for I am a teacher and I have the day off from work today. This has happened to me before when I have had to suck it up and drag myself to work no matter how bad I was feeling.
If you ever have one of these sleepless nights and you don’t have the luxury of sleeping in the next day, what do you do?
Here’s my list of five ideas:
- Don’t beat yourself up. So you had one sleepless night. It is not the end of the world. You will most likely sleep great tonight.
- Coffee helps ( a lot!)
- If you can sneak in a little power cat nap during your day that would be great.
- Make yourself smile even if you feel like you know what. We can trick ourselves into feeling better than we do.
- Find something about your job or plans for the day that engages you. The more you can focus on a task or something interesting, the less you will be thinking about how tired you feel- and perhaps the day will go by that much quicker too.
That’s it. Good luck. You will get through your day, sleep much better tonight, and wake up tomorrow much more fresh.
