Enthusiastic by day, restful sleep by night

A basic belief we have here at The Warm Milk Journal is that there is a connection between how we live by day affects how we sleep at night.  Having enthusiasm during the day means we are experiencing joy and a positive energy in our lives.

Fulfilling, joy filled days increases the chance of our sleeping well at night.

How can you get more enthusiasm into our days? Here are ten ideas:

  1. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for what you have.
  2. If you are not happy with what you are doing for a living or you find yourself in unhealthy relationships:  gather the courage to create positive change for your life.
  3. Look for the beauty in little things.
  4. Do not over commit. Learn to say no. Spend your time on activities that truly have meaning for you.
  5. Remember to have fun: play and laugh. Lighten up!
  6. Smile.
  7. Do things you are good at and enjoy.
  8. Try new things on a regular basis. You may surprise and delight yourself into a new experience, hobby, relationships, etc…
  9. Think of all the good you bring to others and our world. You are needed, appreciated, and significant!
  10. Write a list in your journal of people, places, and experiences that put a spring into your step. I guarantee you will be smiling and feeling pretty good after this journal entry.

With enthusiasm,

Debra

When you’re just too jazzed to sleep: Five ideas to get through the day when you’re sleep deprived

Every now and then there are just nights when you can’t sleep. the usual reasons for insomnia are not applying: you did not drink caffeine, you are not upset or anxious, you are healthy, you are physically comfortable, your partner is being good and not snoring, etc. – and yet, you can’t sleep. Your brain is just wired for whatever reason and won’t shut down.

I had one of those nights last night. Yesterday me and my fiance did a lot of brainstorming about our wedding coming up in March and some business ideas for me. I have a lot going on in my life (mostly good things) and I am excited. Usually I put in such a full day that I have no problem going to sleep. Not last night.

I suppose I could have meditated and worked harder at slowing my mind down but the truth is I was enjoying thinking about all of these wonderful things I am planning for my life. The result: not a lot of sleep.

I am fortunate today for I am a teacher and I have the day off from work today. This has happened to me before when I have had to suck it up and drag myself to work no matter how bad I was feeling.

If you ever have one of these sleepless nights and you don’t have the luxury of sleeping in the next day, what do you do?

Here’s my list of five ideas:

  1. Don’t beat yourself up. So you had one sleepless night. It is not the end of the world. You will most likely sleep great tonight.
  2. Coffee helps ( a lot!)
  3. If you can sneak in a little power cat nap during your day that would be great.
  4. Make yourself smile even if you feel like you know what. We can trick ourselves into feeling better than we do.
  5. Find something about your job or plans for the day that engages you. The more you can focus on a task or something interesting, the less you will be thinking about how tired you feel- and perhaps the day will go by that much quicker too.

That’s it. Good luck. You will get through your day, sleep much better tonight, and wake up tomorrow much more fresh.

  3. Do something today that is messy.
  4. Get outside
  5. Spend time with people you adore.
  6. Play a game you haven’t played since you were a child
  7. Throw the football or basketball around.
  8. Go out for ice cream
