Did you know that being too nice can be dangerous? An exclusive interview with author, martial arts instructor, and former Bachelorette contestant, Sean Ramey.

We often write about being “too nice” here at The Warm Milk Journal. Did you know that being too nice could put you in danger? I found this out when I had the good fortune to chat with Sean Ramey!

Sean Ramey has been studying martial arts for over 28 years. He is currently a 6th Degree Black Belt and has appeared in numerous commercials and movies such as, Winner Takes All and Extreme Force. Most recently he appeared in the fourth season of ABC’s hit show, “The Bachelorette”. In 2009, he was inducted into the U.S.A. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He owns Kentucky Tae Kwon Do & Fitness Academy, Inc., one of the largest and fastest growing martial arts studios in the US, as stated by United Professionals, one of North Americas largest martial arts consulting companies. He is in the process of releasing a couple books to the public, “D.E.F.E.N.D. A Basic Guide on Self-Defense” and another on Bully Defense for children, both of which will donate 20% of all revenues to the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund He and his wife and daughter live in the suburbs outside of Louisville, Ky.

Hello Sean!

Hello Debra.

I am so glad to have a chance to chat with you.

Thanks.

We all need to get a good night sleep. A big part of getting a good night sleep is feeling safe and secure. I understand you have a martial arts school?

Yes, Debra, I founded Kentucky Tae Kwon Do & Fitness Academy, Inc in 1998, and it has grown to over 350 families that are actively involved. We offer classes for students as young as 4 and have students as young as 70 years of age! The Academy is a world class facility with over 5,000 square feet, complete with dressing rooms, viewing mezzanine for families, and a kids play room. The Academy was rated as one of the fastest growing martial arts schools and in the TOP 50 Martial Arts Schools, by United Professionals, one of North America’s largest martial arts consulting firms.

That sounds great! My husband is a martial arts instructor too and I really respect what you guys are about…

Yes, it’s a way of life…

I know!
Here at The Warm Milk Journal, we deal with anxiety issues and getting a good night sleep. Some of my readers have been victims of abusive spouses or victims of violent crime. What can women do to protect themselves?

Abuse and bullying is truly an epidemic in today’s society, and has been for quite sometime. My best advice for women is to quit being so sympathetic. I always give the example of Ted Bundy, who preyed upon women’s sympathies. I always inform women that their best weapon is awareness. Being Aware alone, can save more lives than any choke hold, punch or kick….combined.

That’s an eye opener for me, Sean. Ted Bundy was a charmer. I could see myself going along and helping him…. So scary! (don’t really want to think about it)! I hope my friends out there are paying attention to this too! We need to get over this too-nice syndrome, don’t we?

Absolutely.

Many of my readers are women in their 40s or older. Can older people learn martial arts for the first time?

It is never too late to start learning how to protect yourself and your loved ones! We all stress the importance of reading, writing, and arithmetic but forget to express the importance of life’s most important life skill….Survival.

I am a mom and fifth grade school teacher. At school I use The Second Step violence prevention program and teach lessons from The Bully Free Classroom by Allan Beane. Are you familiar with these programs?

It is wonderful to see schools implementing Bully Free Zones, Bully Buster Programs, etc.. I believe we would all see violence in our schools drop now and in the future, from halting bullying and the effects it has on its victims. It’s a fact that many of these horrific attacks we see at schools have been carried out be those who were bullied at sometime or another.

I hear you have written some books?

Yes. D.E.F.E.N.D. A Basic Guide on Self-Defense will be in bookstores and available in ebook format before Christmas. At Kentucky Tae Kwon Do and Fitness Academy, Inc., I have the wonderful pleasure of touching hundreds of people’s lives by teaching them the self confidence and skills to protect themselves. However, with this book, I have the possibility of touching thousands (and maybe millions) of people in the same way.

Also, 20% of all proceeds from the book will go towards the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund. The brave men and women of our armed services are the true heroes; they are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom. The least that we can do is ensure that their children are taken care of, if they don’t make it back.

These both sound great. I can’t wait to get a copy of each…

Thank you, Debra, for allowing me to talk about this project to your readers.

My pleasure, Sean. We all want to be safe, secure, and sleep well. Thank YOU!

Here’s to being safe, taking care of ourselves, and getting a good night sleep tonight and every night. Much thanks to Sean Ramey and all of you!

In peace,

Debra

Being organized helps TV mom Renee Wyatt live a well balanced life: an exclusive interview

Wyatt PR

Renee Wyatt is the wife of Rich Wyatt and mother to four children ages ranging from 3 to 21. She helps run her family’s firearm business and stars in the Discovery Channel’s American Guns Reality TV show.

Hello Renee. It’s so nice to meet you. How are you?

Hi Debra. I am fantastic. Thanks. I want to start out by saying that I am a big proponent of getting a good night sleep. I believe everything we do is affected by the quality of our sleep. I really like what you do.

That’s great. I appreciate that. I have to start out by asking: Is it scary having all those firearms and things that can blow up near you?

No, not at all. A gun is a tool. Guns don’t kill people. Improper training is the problem.

What do you do to keep your family safe?

I teach them life skills. It is important to develop a sense of awareness. Be aware of your surroundings. If something doesn’t feel right, get out of there. The best self defense is not being in a dangerous situation to begin with. Get yourself proper training. Be a difficult target.

One of our big goals here at The Warm Milk Journal is to live a well balanced life by day. How do you manage to raise four kids, run a large business,
and star in a reality TV show? I think a lot of us would be really stressed if we tried to do all of that.

Debra, I’ve become a master at efficiency. Time management, keeping organized, that’s what keeps me going. I like the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing my tasks.

You have a point there. Being unorganized, allowing things to pile up, and procrastinating is an invitation to stress and anxiety.

Yes, absolutely.

So, at the end of the day, what do you do to relax and pamper yourself?

Since we are on a television show I don’t watch a whole lot of TV. I do enjoy reading.

What book(s) would be found on your bed stand right now?

I am currently enjoying Gemma Halliday’s High Heels Mysteries

Thank you so much, Renee. It’s been so nice to meet and chat with you!

Same here, Debra, you’re so sweet!

Coming attraction:

An interview with Rich and Renee’s 21 year old son, Kurt. Kurt helps run his family’s business and plans to take it over one day. I asked Kurt some tough questions about violence in our communities, young people doing drugs, and how to encourage our youth in today’s tough economy.

Stay tuned!

Protecting our children: an exclusive interview with TV dad Rich Wyatt of The Discovery Channel’s American Guns

Wyatt PR

Rich Wyatt knows a thing or two about protecting people. He is a former firefighter and a retired Alma, Colorado Chief of Police Officer with more than twenty years of law enforcement experience. As a master firearms instructor, Rich is certified by the NRA, the FBI, and most manufacturers of firearms as an armorer.

As owner of Gunsmoke Guns, Colorado’s number one firearms training center and largest professional gunsmith facility, he trains thousands of people from all walks of life on how to protect themselves.

Rich was the host of Spike TV’s Don’t be a Victim series Practical Tactical. He now stars with his family in The Discovery Channel’s Reality TV show American Guns.

Probably his most important role as protector is one of husband and father to four children, ranging in ages from 3 to 21.

I got a chance to catch up with Rich on the phone yesterday as he was driving through the Rocky Mountains. Here is an excerpt of our conversation:

Rich, my readers are interested in getting a good night sleep. It is hard to do that if we don’t feel safe at night…

Yes, I would agree with that. You can’t always count on the police to protect you either. It is important to have confidence in yourself to deal with any situation you may find yourself in.

How do we get that confidence?

To achieve a mindset of confidence, you must have proper training.

My husband teaches martial arts to people to help them with their confidence and self defense skills. What kind of training do you offer?

Out at Gunsmoke we offer courses in concealed carry weapons, pistol shooting, rifles, and shotguns.

Wyatt PR

That sounds pretty intense. How long does it take for the average person to learn how to use firearms?

Debra, give us three days and we can change your life.

Can anybody do this?

Yes, we train students from all walks of life: from law enforcement to private citizens.

Rich, this is Father’s Day weekend. You have four beautiful children. You must be so proud of them.

Yes, thank you, I am.

How would you advise parents on how to keep their children safe?

I would say first of all, get yourself properly trained. Get confidence in yourself.

That makes sense. If we are confident, our children will pick up on that and feel safe themselves.

Yes, that’s true.

What about training for the children themselves? How old do they need to be?

For sport, I taught my kids how to handle a gun at about age 5. But for firearms training, I think the years 13 to 16 are the perfect age.

One last thing…what do you do to relax at the end of the day?

I enjoy a nice meal with the family, talk to my wife, watch a little TV….

Thank you so much, Rich.

It’s been a pleasure, Debra.
