Tending to hearth and home for restful nights

A message you will hear frequently on posts here at The Warm Milk Journal is that how we live our days really affects how we sleep at night.  Our home and family life is a very important component to a well lived life. If we are not experiencing peace in our homes with our loved ones chances are we may be having unrest at night. Here are ten ways to promote blessed peace in our homes.

  1. Be sure every member of the household is respected.
  2. Household chores are clearly assigned to each member (adults and kids) so everybody is helping to run the household smoothly.
  3. Keep house clean and orderly.
  4. Keep house smelling good: citrus, something yummy cooking in the kitchen, etc.
  5. Share meals together.
  6. Turn the tv off once in a while.
  7. Promote reading in your household.
  8. Promote conversation.
  9. Have fun together.
  10. Make sure every member has a space of his or her own to get needed solitude from time to time.

Put things in order…and the God of love and peace will be with you.-2 Corinthians 13:11

People need order. With order, there is serenity and peace. There is a sense of security and clarity. When there is clutter and chaos, our brains don’t function as well. We get irritable and feel stressed.

What is one thing you can do today to create more order in your life? Organize your desk at work? Thin out a closet or drawer? Delete the emails in you inbox? You do have control of your life. You do not need to feel overwhelmed. Take one little action step a day and you will begin to feel more calm and confident knowing you are the one in charge.

Get out your journal and write down a few ideas.  Commit to doing one idea a day. Go to sleep peacefully tonight with the knowledge that you are taking steps to create more order in your life.

Declutter Your Environment

Our living, work, and mental space have a definite impact on our well being. If my house, classroom, car, closet, bedroom, mind are a mess then I am probably not getting the most restful sleep possible.

It is finally Spring. What a nice time to clean, organize, and de-clutter our spaces. There are plenty of books and articles out there on this subject. The important thing is to not get overwhelmed. Remember the earlier post about baby steps? Any little thing you do that cleans, organizes, simplifies, and streamlines your life is a step in the right direction.

Get out your journal and write down some things you can do. Envision your clean, uncluttered environment as if it is already that way now. Enjoy the peace and solace of that vision. Then take action. Even if it is just one thing (like giving that sweater away that you never wear anymore), you will feel better. It is very cleansing to get rid of clutter.

The universe abhors a vacuum. By getting rid of the things that no longer please and nurture you, you are making room in your life for opportunities and better things . A bonus too is that a clean orderly bedroom will promote more restful sleep!
