Twenty ways to stay centered in love

Staying centered in love comes with many benefits. Among them are: feeling positive and calm, better health, improved relationships, having a solid grounding, and sleeping better at night. Love is a wonderful compass to guide one’s life. As Valentines Day approaches, I felt like focusing on ways to help us stay centered in love. Here is my list at the moment. Perhaps in your journal you can write a list of your own…

Twenty ways to to stay centered in love:

     1.  When your partner or spouse angers or irritates you, remember the reasons why you fell in love with her or him in the first place.

     2.  Do nice little things for the ones you love. Acts of service are a very loving gesture.

     3.  When your kids are driving you crazy take care of yourself. Take a walk. Take a bath. Hire a babysitter. We parents have more to give our offspring when

we are taking care of ourselves and practicing self love first.

     4.  Start your day with a loving intention. Intentions are incredibly powerful and they work!

     5.  Meditate

     6.  Play, laugh, and have fun with your loved ones frequently.

     7.  Get some perspective. If you feel an upset coming on, will it really matter much tomorrow or next week or next year?

     8.  Are you the kind of person your mother would be proud of even when nobody else is looking?

     9.  Read inspirational books and biographies.

    10. Surround yourself with loving and positive people.

    11. Be an active member of a community: join a church, a club, etc.

    12. Cook and invite people over for dinner. Breaking bread with others is a wonderful act of love.

    13. Volunteer.

    14. Tithe.

    15. If you don’t have a pet consider getting one. Our furry friends are wonderful mentors of living unconditional love.

    16. Make love be more important than being right.

    17. Make love be more important than having material wealth.

    18. Focus on the things you appreciate in your life including all of the people you love and who love you.

    19. Make love.

    20. Forgive easily

Ten essentials to getting a good night sleep

Ten essentials to getting a good night sleep:

  1. Do all  you can to feel good about yourself and your life.
  2. Wear socks! Yes, I know there are those of you out there who just don’t think wearing socks to bed is very cool or sexy- but get over it. If you want a good night sleep, keep your feet warm.
  3. Decide to make peace a higher priority than being right. It is actually a good feeling to tell your spouse ” you have a good point” or “I’m sorry”. Being humble leads to good sleep. Making the ego boss leads to sleepless, angry, tormented nights- you choose!
  4. Sleep on a high quality mattress. Good sleep and your back will thank you.
  5. Don’t overdo caffeine or alcohol at night.
  6. Don’t eat overly heavy foods too close to bedtime.
  7. Nurture your spiritual life. Prayer, meditation, and journal writing really works.
  8. Make love. Good hormones. Good sleep.
  9. A hot bath is a very relaxing thing to do before turning in.
  10. Clean comfortable sheets and pillows.

Instead of counting sleep, do these seven things…

When you are ready to sleep tonight, instead of counting sheep, do this:

  1. Think of all of your successes today. Yes, you were a success in some way! If you made just one other human being smile today, you were a success.
  2. Take a hot bath or shower.
  3. Read something spiritual or relaxing.
  4. Write in your journal.
  5. Breathe
  6. Do gentle stretching exercises
  7. Make love

Sweet dreams.

Winding Down

Many of us after a day of work, getting the family fed, catching up on a few household chores, paying the bills, bathing kids etc. are ready for some down time before going to bed. What kind of activities do we choose? Watching the evening news? Watching movies with a lot of excitement and violence in them? Playing video games? Catching up on emails?

Instead of participating in anxiety inducing activities, we can try activities such as these instead:

  1. reading something heartwarming or inspirational
  2. reading something fairly mindless and relaxing like a magazine
  3. do a puzzle
  4. play scrabble
  5. crochet, knit, scrapbook
  6. write: creative writing, writing in a journal, writing letters
  7. meditate
  8. gentle yoga
  9. easy evening stroll
  10. take a bath
  11. listen to soothing music
  12. play with your cat or dog
  13. draw, color, or paint
  14. play an instrument
  15. slow dance with your spouse or partner
  16. give and receive a massage with your partner
  17. make love
