letting go

Five things I am letting go of now. What would you like to drop, release, and let go of… ?

Right now, I am choosing to let go of:

1. the need to control or change my husband.

2. being upset when things don’t go as I originally intended

3. self criticism

4. negative images and stories in the media (Just don’t need them!)

5. doubt

What would you like to let go of? Here’s a little secret: we can let go of anything we want in our lives anytime we choose to do so. It is very liberating when we do let go of things, people, beliefs, and circumstances that no longer serve us. It feels very good, as a matter of fact!

So, what would you like to let go of right now?

Write it down in your journal. Do it. Let it go and don’t look back.

Good night.

In Peace,

Debra

Please help us all become the healthy and whole people we are intended to be: this morning’s prayer

Dear God,

Please help me to see what is the most deserving of my time and energy

and then help me to let the rest go.

May I make good use of the time given me today.

If healing needs to happen within me or with others who are in my life,

please help us all become the healthy and whole people you intended for us to be.

Thank you.

Amen.

Debra

Release: Letting it go for peace

Letting go

release

that is peace.

Holding tightly onto

things, people, or ideas

will only keep us on a tense tightrope

of expectations waiting to be dashed

from circumstances outside of our control.

Why give our peace away to such folly when we can simply let it all go?

Yes, LET IT GO.

In peace,

Debra

Two very little, but powerful words for peace and better sleep: JUST BE

My last post I wrote about being less busy during this holiday season. I am finding it is really helping me to not get too caught up in all of the busy-ness that this season tempts us with. I say tempt for it is an offering off busy-ing ourselves that we can either accept or reject.

Aside from the holidays I have been experiencing high levels of stress as a public school teacher of late. I won’t go into the details, but it has been a challenging year so far.

Thoughts of not wanting to go to work, a constricted and tight chest, feeling very run down physically, and being emotionally drained have been symptoms of my letting the circumstances of my work life get to me. I hit a low point, and I prayed. The last few days I have been doing a lot of praying, writing in my journal, and reading wonderful spiritual books.

The message that life, God, the divine, etc. has given me is to JUST BE. That’s it. Simple.

Yes, I still have a busy job to go to and to do lists and goals I want to accomplish- but I also am being reminded of the delight and peace that comes with JUST BEING.

It is bliss. To just be. No agendas. No worrying about being productive. Just being.

One of my favorite business books about negotiating is entitled Negotiate This! By caring, But Not T-H-A-T much, by Herb Cohen.

I just love that idea: caring, just not that much. I am always someone who cares so much. I am an achiever and a people pleaser which is a great recipe for anxiety and stress. Perhaps some of you out there can relate. What if we, though, still continued to care (like the good people we are) but just not too much?  Would that be so terrible?

I also like the statement “Let Go and Let God”. There is a certain amount of relief and peace that comes when we have just had enough, we feel we can’t do it all on our own, and we can choose to just turn it over to a higher power. That is peace. A wonderful book that expounds on this message of letting go and letting God is Kathy Cordova’s Let go let miracles happen The Art Of Spiritual Surrender. This is a great read to have on your bedside table.

The Beatles old classic song “Let It Be” comes to me as I write this, and…

I would like to end this post this evening with the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

A wonderful meditation to release worries

Get in a comfortable sitting position or do this lying down before you go to sleep :

Breathe.

Think of anything you are worried about, angry about, or afraid of. Then think “I am letting go with balance”.

Silence

Think again: ” I am letting go with balance”.

Breathe.

Now get more specific. For example: “I am letting my need for others’ approval go with balance”. Breathe. Silence.

Or, ” I am letting my fear of not having enough money go with balance”. Breathe. Silence. Or, “I am letting go of worrying about my mother’s health with balance”. Silence

The next step to this meditation is to connect with the Divine. Think: “God is able”. Breathe. Silence.

Again: “God is able”. Silence.

Now, get more specific. For example: “God is able to see the perfect person that I am” or “God is able to supply me with anything I need”, or “God is able to express perfect health”.

This process of release and letting go and putting our trust in a higher power is incredibly freeing and peace giving.

I highly recommend this meditation before bed, first thing in the morning, or anytime you are feeling stressed, upset, or worried.

“Out of clutter, find simplicity”- Albert Einstein

Yesterday I wrote a post about three things that interfere with our peace of mind: feeling disorganized, being overly committed, and work issues.

Being disorganzied is often caused by feeling surrounded by clutter.

On Sunday mornings I have a ritual of drinking coffee with the paper and then doing some spiritual reading, journal writing, and centering. This morning I happened to pick up Shakti Gawain’s classic book: Creative Visualization and then turned to the section about clearing. She offers all kinds of exercises to clear out the emotional and physical clutter in our lives. Then I picked up another book I have in our bathroom: Simple Abundance A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach. The entry for today, May 16th is entitled: “Clearing Out What Isn’t Useful or Beautiful”. I think God or the universe is talking to me here.

I truly do believe that the universe does not like a vacuum. If we want to create the lives of our dreams we need to make room for the stuff we want and clear out what no longer serves us.

For emotional clutter: we can write down any worries, hurts, or challenges we are having with people. Get it all out on paper. Then when we are ready we can just tear the paper up or put it in the fireplace. This forgiving and releasing process can be very freeing.  It takes a lot of energy to remain hurt, victimized, resentful and irritated with things, events, memories, and people.

For physical clutter: Start with one closet, drawer, or room in your house. Or begin with your desk at work. Commit to clearing out things you no longer need or find beautiful. Give them away so that someone else can enjoy these things.

When I need a break from my computer this morning, I plan on thinning out my closet and dresser drawers. It is Springtime. We are really almost beginning our Florida summer here. It is time to get rid of some things and make room for lighter, brighter things for this new season.

We don’t have to let clutter stress us or weigh us down.
