What do I want to learn this Fall? A journal writing exercise

Tony Robbins teaches “CANI” which is Constant and Neverending Improvement.

I truly believe that learning and trying new things at any age is what keeps us youthful, energetic, vibrant, and sleeping well at night! If we are learning and growing we are excited about life and looking forward to each new day.

The opposite is a less rosy scenario. Feeling stuck in a rut, same old routines, feeling old, feeling like we are less mentally sharp, feeling bored, no energy, dreading getting up in the morning, lack of purpose, etc… this state breeds depression, apathy, and anxiety (not the stuff of happy well lived days and restful nights of sleep).

Today I invite you to think about what you would like to learn how to do. Perhaps this is something you already know a bit about but would like to deepen your understanding. Maybe there is something completely different (some kind of class perhaps) being offered in your community that would be fun to try?

Fall is a great time to try some new things. The air is cooler and change is in the air!

Ready to try this? Let’s see… my journal entry this beautiful morning may look something like…

This Fall, I want to learn:

1. more about the history of the South. I live in Florida now and this area is rich with history that I would like to know more about. I am especially enchanted with Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina…

2. more about wines! I enjoy my evening glass but don’t know a whole lot about it. What is the difference between a $50.00 bottle of wine and a $10.00 one? I would like to go to wine tastings and do some reading about it. When we can afford to, it is a dream of mine to visit Tuscany, Italy and Napa Valley, California.

3. I want to go to a dance class and learn some moves!

4. How to get published in this increasingly changing technological world.

I have many more ideas for myself but wish to stop here so that you may start your entry.

Have a blessed day!

Debra

Being a life long learner will keep us young and help us to sleep well at night; a journal writing exercise

We are never too old to learn new things. I firmly believe that learning keeps us young and vibrant. I love to challenge myself. When I am excited about something (new that I’m learning) I am absolutely alive. The neurons in my brain are making connections and I am in the now, in the flow!

I pose three questions for your journaling tonight:

1. What are things you remember learning about in your past that you were very excited about?

2. What are you currently learning about that you are excited about?

3. What would you like to learn more about? (just the anticipation will get you excited).

Let’s see… shall we begin?

What do I remember learning about that I was really excited about?

1. Figuring out 8th grade algebra. When the light bulb turned on, it was amazing!
2. Learning about dolphins in the 6th grade.
3. Learning about the culture of generational poverty when I went back to school to become a teacher. Very powerful and eye opening!

What am I currently learning about that I am very excited about?

1. George Washington
2. Thomas Jefferson
3. The states of North Carolina and Virginia

What would I like to learn more about?

1. I would like to become more fluent in French
2. Gardening in North Florida
3. History of The United States

Your turn!

In peace,

Debra

Five Journal Writing Prompts For Your Weekend

As you move into your weekend, here are five  journal writing prompts for your quiet YOU time:

  1. What are you currently thankful for? What we appreciate appreciates…
  2. What are you feeling indecisive about? How would it feel if you just made up your mind, committed, and decided about it? Decision making plays a huge roll in how we feel about our lives. I will be writing a post on decision making in the near future…
  3. What would you like to do this weekend that is just pure fun?
  4. If you were to think about five fears from now, what would you like to be doing? Describe your life in great detail. Now, what if you had only five months to make these things happen. What would you do?
  5. List some new things that you are excited to learn about.

Have a beautiful day and weekend,

Debra

Learn new things to stay young, be happy, and get a better night sleep

I am a teacher and a life long learner. I firmly believe that if we are learning new things and continue to be curious about life and our world, we continue to grow and not grow old.

Learning new things provides these benefits:

  1. You are never bored
  2. Keeps your mind active and may help ward off aging and diseases such as Alzheimers
  3. Keeps you enthusiastic
  4. Helps to prevent depression and anxiety
  5. When you’ve put in an active, productive, and happy day you are more likely to sleep well at night.
  6. Improves your social life: you never know who you will meet as you learn about and explore new hobbies, business interests, etc.
  7. Stay young. As mentioned above, people who are learning do not grow old.

In your journal this morning, I encourage you to write down anything you are excited about. What are you learning about? What are some things you would like to know more about? Brainstorm some ideas. You will probably get excited at the thought of all these possibilities.

What are some ways to learn new things at this time in your life?

  1. You can always go back to school. It’s never too late. At age 38 I went back to school to become a teacher. It was tremendously empowering and exciting to do that after being home and raising my children for several years.
  2. You can take a class  learn how to do new craft, foreign language, musical instrument. You name it.
  3. Check out some local meetings in your area and meet some new people while learning more about something you are interested in such as investment groups (I met my fiance at a local real estate investing meeting!), book clubs, Toastmasters, etc. Anything you can think of there is probably a group of people in your town or city gathering together to do it. Try MeetUp! Online to find meetings in your area.
  4. Browse bookstores and your library.
  5. Surf the internet.
  6.  Ask questions. If you want to learn more about something find a mentor or someone who is successful at that thing and email them or meet with them. I find people are usually happy to share their knowledge with others.

Have a blessed day!

What do you want to learn more about? A journal writing idea for tonight

If we are not learning, we are not growing. For a journal writing exercise tonight, list some things that you would like to learn more about. Don’t edit yourself. Write down anything you have an interest in. Don’t worry about what it would take to educate yourself about these topics. What are you interested in? What have you always been curious about? What do you feel like you never really got as a youth in school and would now like to understand it better?

Here would be a few things on my list- I want to learn more about:

  1. teaching kids how to write
  2. making a living as a writer
  3. gardening in Florida
  4. romantic getaways that are a weekend’s drive away from where I live
  5. The history of Charleston, SC
  6. How people learn
  7. How to develop intuition
  8. taking care of myself better when menopause begins
  9. what makes relationships work
  10. how to market a brand, product, or service using the latest technology
  11. martial arts

That’s my list. Your turn…..
