Five surefire tips to cheer you up when you are feeling down

We all have our days or moods when we are down. Perhaps we are tired or feel unappreciated by our spouses or for no apparent reason at all we just aren’t quite ourselves.

This morning I offer you five surefire ways to cheer up:

1. get outside. Time outside, the fresh air, the greenery… all will do your spirits a lot of good.

2. Write in your journal. Writing lists about what you feel grateful for is a great mood lifter.

3. Smile, even if you don’t feel like it! The physical act of smiling “tricks” our bodies into feeling happier. It works!

4. Ditto for laughing. Laugh even if you don’t feel like it. Feel good hormones will kick in.

5. Wear something bright and cheerful. On my blue mornings I pull something bright red out of my closet to wear.

Have a great day!

13 things to do when you’re feeling down

There are going to be times when we just don’t feel our best. We are run down and tired, feeling sick, the bad weather is getting to us, our kids aren’t behaving, hormones, etc. Sometimes we just have to get through these low times.

If you are experiencing a down time, know that “this too shall” pass. It will. But, what to do in the meantime?

Here are a thirteen suggestions:

  1. Be easy and gentle on yourself. Today is not the day to push your limits. Take it easy.
  2. Just be. Don’t worry about how bad you feel. It will pass.
  3. Spend time with supportive people and cuddly pets.
  4. Watch a movie.
  5. Read a book.
  6. Take a leisurely walk if you are up for it. Sometimes just getting out of the house and a little physical activity is enough to lift us.
  7. Eat and drink comfort foods: warm soups, tea, chocolate!
  8. Meditate.
  9. Write in your journal. Think of something good you are accomplishing in your life. Write it down. Think of something fun you are going to do when you feel better. Begin to plan for it.
  10. This is a great time to connect with others on social sites such as Facebook or Twitter.
  11. Call your mom (or a dear friend you haven’t talked to in a while).
  12. Go out and buy a plant or flowers. Bringing a little nature indoors may cheer you up.
  13. When all else fails, just breathe. Tomorrow is another day.
