gratitude journal

A gratitude journal entry for a balmy February day (yes, balmy! Very mild winter so far…)

I Am thankful for the things I have now in my life such as:

1. The Atlantic ocean and a beautiful beach just blocks away from my home. This evening I enjoyed the pastel pinks and blues of the sky and on the water as the sun went down. The Florida birds were fun to watch and I enjoyed my walk and doing my Bikram yoga poses on the shore…

2. The nice glass of Cabernet Sauvignon that I am enjoying right now.

3. The productive day that I had with my students today.

4. My home which is clean, comfortable, warm, and a fun space to live in.

5. My husband whom I absolutely adore. I still get butterfly flutters when I think of how much I love him.

6. My adorable daughter who is smart and ambitious and ready to take on the world at age 14.

7. My parents and brother who are always there for me.

8. My ex whose friendship and mutual caring for our children I tremendously appreciate.

9. My beautiful Merlot red 2009 Honda Accord. It is the greatest car.

10. Being safe and healthy and alive.

Now it is your turn, Dear friend…

What are you thankful that you have in your life right now?

In Peace,

Debra

To be thankful now for things large and small: a journal writing exercise

To be thankful for things that are easy to take for granted until you don’t have them…

Have you ever had a toothache, a bladder infection, been hung over, etc. and wish you felt better?

Have you ever had an unexpected or regular bills piling up amounting to more than what you have in your bank account?

Here’s a novel idea: how about feeling gratitude when we have our health, we are pain free, we are well rested, and we have enough money in the bank?

Let’s be thankful for what we do have NOW.

In your journal write a list of things to be thankful about now.

I am thankful for:

1. Being alive

2. My daughter being happy

3. Having enough money to send my daughter to a nice Girl Scout summer camp this July

4. My kind and loving husband

5. My students who are still learning despite it being very close to the end of our school year…

6. I don’t have a headache

7. I am centered and anxiety/worry-free at the moment…

Your turn, Dear Warm Milk Reader. What do you have going on to be thankful for? It sometimes can be the littlest of things.

Goodnight,

Debra

Five benefits to keeping a gratitude journal

How many of you are keeping a gratitude journal? I find it to be very beneficial to jot down a few things I am thankful for either in the morning or right before I go to bed.

Developing an attitude of gratitude provides these five benefits:

  1. helping us to stay focused on all the good and abundance all around us
  2. redirects our minds if we are thinking about something negative or experiencing a negative emotional state such as sadness, fear, anxiety, etc.
  3. What we appreciate appreciates so we will manifest more of the good stuff if we are thankful for it now
  4. Keeps us centered, peaceful, more joyful, and more connected spiritually to others and God
  5. It improves the quality of our relationships for we appreciate the special people in our life more and we are pleasant to be around as well

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to begin a gratitude journal. The beauty of this practice is that it does not require much time. It’s amazing how rapidly thinking about what you are thankful for  can turn your state of mind around to a more positive one.

My gratitude list for this morning might look something like this.

This morning, I am thankful for:

  1. My home
  2. My fiance
  3. My cat, mew
  4. My children
  5. My comfortable bed
  6. This rainy day so that I can happily nest and write all day

I’ll stop here. Your turn, dear reader….

Have a blessed day,

Debra : )
