A Pythagorean pattern breathing exercise for quick de-stressing

Each breath we breathe is the gift of life. Conscious breathing is a great way to get in the present, relax, and just BE. Here is a really great exercise to try anytime time you want to take a mental break and de-stress. Right before bed would be an excellent time as well.

Here’s how to do it.

1. You are going to count using a number cycle 5-3-4. This is known as the Pythagorean pattern which is based on a mathematical triangle concept.

2. When you are ready, close your eyes and slowly inhale to the count of 5. Hold it for 3 counts. Then slowly exhale for the count of 4.

That is it. Repeat.

A variation would be to do the opposite: 4-3-5, making the exhaling the longer part of the exercise. As you are exhaling you may hum a long vowel sound like (o-o-o-a-a-a). The vibrations of the sounds we make help us to focus on the exercise and help to relax us more quickly.

Try it. Play with it. I think you will like this one!

In peace,

Debra

Getting the busy-ness out of the business of living a well balanced life during the holidays

It’s the time of year when we can all get stessed with our busy to do lists. The holidays don’t have to be stressful. Here are some ideas to destress and get some busy-ness

out of the business of living a well balanced life this holiday season.

  1. Less is more. Clutter stresses our physical environment and emotional lives. Do we really need all the stuff? Get rid of things that no longer delight you. Perhaps you can make agreements with people in your life to give money to charity instead of buying each other presents this year.
  2. Permit yourself to just be. Get off the treadmill. Ahhh…that feels nice.
  3. Meditate.
  4. Take a walk and enjoy the outside air.
  5. Have a holiday party if that is something you enjoy. Skip it if you are doing it out of a sense of obligation. Life’s too short. Stressing yourself does not put out good energy for yourself or anyone else. Remind yourself of what the holidays are really supposed to be about: God’s love, the love of your family and friends, being thankful, etc.

I am stopping here for this post is going to be simple. A long list of ideas would be too busy.
