Anxiety Be Gone! This week at The Warm Milk Journal we are tooting our horns!

For those of us with introverted tendencies or who have issues with social anxiety, putting ourselves out there can be a challenge. For much of my life, I have struggled with speaking up for myself, not wanting to bring attention to myself, and shying away from social or professional opportunities.

Well, that was THEN! I am in my forties now and I feel like this is a wonderful time in my life. I have found my voice, I am quitting my people pleasing ways, and I am learning about self promotion and marketing.

I don’t believe it is bragging or being narcissistic if we share with others the good that is going in our lives. I would never want to be a bore and nor do I like to hang out with people who do nothing but talk about themselves. I doubt many of us here have that issue. If anything, we don’t like to talk about ourselves much (especially in a crowd,at a party,or business meeting).

We had a little fun at our Warm Milk Journal Facebook page this week…

We shared some of our accomplishments and things we are proud of with each other.

A few examples:

There is Rachel Dignall who shared,

“I am proud of my Hypnobirthing business
and all the wonderful Mums, Dads and Babies I’ve helped”

*a sweet note that Rachel added: “I supported two beautiful births last weekend and one of the babies was named after me”. :-)

There is Jennifer Andrew who just graduated yesterday from The University of Stirling, Scotland with a BA in Psychology with honors. Congratulations, Jennifer!

Kate Garrett got one of her poems published in a magazine this month! You can see it in the Word Life section of Now Then.

Michele Poet completed some important editing work recently!

There’s Camille Pask who is a food writer, a trained chef, and a working owner/operator of a semi truck!
You can check out her Food Blog at A Day In The Life of the GypsyGourmet

There is my dear friend Dawn Herring, who shared with us that she has recently published an ebook, The Birthday Wall. For any of you journal writers out there, Dawn hosts a wonderful journal chat every Thursday on Twitter (2:00 Pacific time, 5:00 Eastern). Use the hashtag #journalchat to participate.

I guess this post won’t be complete if I don’t toot the horn for The Warm Milk Journal just a bit… We have recently increased our daily visits by 50%! I have surpassed the 10,000 follower mark on Twitter. I continue to be inspired and grateful for all the comments and support. THANK YOU!

I think there are a lot of us out there who believe in our mission:

To live a well balanced, rewarding life of our dreams by day and sleep restfully at night.

This is just so much fun, I hate to stop!

Remember, it is not a bad thing to toot your horn!

We all have great things to be proud of. The world only benefits when it knows about them.

Coming attraction:

I had the pleasure of interviewing Kaya Turski who is
The most dominant female in ski slopestyle’s young history. I think you will be inspired by this young woman’s spirit and accomplishments.

Over thinking causes anxiety and insomnia. Here are seven ways to get off the over thinking treadmill.

Over thinking leads to anxiety and insomnia. What do I mean by over thinking? Do any of these apply to you?

1. You can’t make up your mind about something. There’s just so many options available!

2. You worry about how people will react or what others will think about…

3. You stew in your mind and replay a social interaction that took place recently or a while ago.. (a phone conversation, a conversation at a dinner party or at work, etc.)

4. You are stuck in indecision because you want to make the right decision. What if you are wrong and you make the “wrong” decision? Horror! Better to make no decision at all, then, so your mind tells you.

5. You have a perfectionist streak in your personality and want things just so…

6. You have a hard time being in the present because you are thinking that maybe you should be somewhere else doing something else.

7. You are prone to experiencing buyer’s remorse.

8. You are prone to regret.

9. You have a fear of failing.

10. You are someone who likes to keep your options open…

If any of these apply to you, you are an over thinker. Chances are you could enjoy more peace and more sleep if you could overcome some of these

over thinking habits.

But, HOW?

Here are seven ideas on getting off the over thinking treadmill:

1.  Stand tall and think confidently about yourself (you are enough, it doesn’t matter what others think)!

2.  Practice making decisions. Even if it is something small like what to order on your dinner menu at a restaurant. Pick something that catches your eye and decisively with enthusiasm order it! Enjoy your meal. Don’t worry about the other things on the menu that you might have ordered or look on at your mate’s or other patrons dinner plates and worry that you could have done better in your dinner selection.

3. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, be happy with it. You are where you are supposed to be doing what you are supposed to be doing that very moment. It is perfect.

4. If you feel you made a “wrong” decision, think of it in terms of you are getting closer to the “right decision”. Be proud that you are taking some kind of action. The only way to really fail is by practicing inaction. By taking action, you are a success- no matter what the outcome!

5. Try this little trick I learned from Eckhart Tolle’s The Now: Close your eyes and ask yourself : “I wonder what my next thought will be?”. This somehow stops your over thinking monkey mind in its tracks. Try it. It really works.

6. Learn to meditate.

7.Discover a passion and then focus on that one thing. Specialize in something. A focused mind with purpose is one at peace and sleeps well at night.

In peace,

Debra : )

How journal writing can help you get a better night of sleep

Keeping a journal has many benefits including getting a better night of sleep. How? You ask….

If you find yourself tossing and turning in your bed quit tormenting yourself. Get up and write for a little while. Keep the lights dim; just bright enough for you to see what you are writing and write! You can write about anything. Write a poem. Describe the chair in your living room. Write a list of all nouns that start with letter b. If you are worrying, write your worries down. Get them off your chest. You can  even tear the pages with the worries and crumble them up and throw them away or toss them in the fireplace if you have a fire going.

Writing focuses our mind. It redirects it. When we focus our minds we are creating a new beginning. In this case, you will very quickly move from being in that anxious, insomniac monkey mind state to being centered. Once you are centered you will get sleepy and go back to sleep.

Here’s to more restful nights of sleep. Keep that journal nearby!  : )

Ten Ways to get creative in your day to day life

When we are creative we are in “the flow”. Our minds and spirits are happily humming along. Have you ever gotten started on a creative project and lost track of time? I think we are intended to be creative creatures. If you are not doing something creative for a living what are some ways you can still nurture your creative side?

1. Trying new recipes or experimenting with an old recipe with your own ideas for ingredients.

2. You know I am going to suggest writing! Play with some poetry or creative writing. Lot’sof fun lists and things you can write about in your journals too.

3. Get out a pencil or pastel and sketch pad and start drawing.

4. Put on some great music and dance and move your body in new and exciting ways.

5. Plan your Spring garden. Have fun with all of those seed catalogs that are coming in. Draw, sketch, clip pictures of flowers, plants, trees, vegetables and plot how they may fit into your landscaping design.

6. Redecorate a room in your house. Try some new colors and accents. Paint. Get a new rug or throws and pillows. Buy some new houseplants. It doesn’t have to be an expensive overhaul. Just thinking about doing small changes in your living space will get your creative juices going! .

7. Organize those photos and create a new scrapbook.

8. Write down in your journal some goals and a vision for your life and vision. Be creative.

9. Come up with new things to try with your spouse or partner in the bedroom. Spice things up.

10. Look at your local Meetup schedule or listing of community offered classes in your hometown. Sometimes just trying something or learning something new will use  different parts of our brain and encourage your creativity. It will give you energy and joy as well.

What is the most important thing right now?

The options of life can be so overwhelming at times. We live during a time where there is just massive amounts of information at our fingertips at any given time, no matter where we are. If we find ourselves drifting and getting lost in the sea of busy-ness and too much of everything we can: shut down, burn out, stress, worry, not sleep, procrastinate, be indecisive, drift, give others or circumstances our power, lose our confidence in ourselves, be irritable, depressed, etc.

When I get in this anxious state, I know I need to just slow my mind down. A good walk or time to sit and read and write in my journal may be all I need.  I breathe. Then I ask myself this one question: “What is the most important thing right now?”. If I focus on doing that one thing, I know I am doing the right thing and I am centered and feeling good.

I encourage you to ask yourself this question when you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

Have a blessed day,

Debra : )
