As a life long learner and achiever I tend to crave information and knowledge. I am always surrounded by my books and I am on the internet quite a bit learning about new things. It is fine to be intellectually curious.. I do believe that we will never be bored or grow old if we continue to learn.
HOWEVER, I also think we can get to a point when information overloads our brains and can cause anxiety and loss of sleep.
Do you ever:
1, Feel like you have too many goals and not enough time to do them?
2. Catch yourself multi-tasking frequently?
3. Have many half-read books overflowing on your shelves and bedside table?
4. Leave many projects unfinished as your brain concocts more fantastic ideas?
5. Surf the web at all hours?
6. Take many classes and attend workshops and seminars frequently?
7. Do you have more than one degree?
I think that to some extent our high tech society sets us up to be this way. Let’s face it- we are constantly being fed information with easy and continued access to it.
Some of us over-achievers and intellectually curious may really end up suffering…
There is a fine line to consider between all of this information enhancing the quality of our lives and causing us enormous distress, anxiety, and loss of sleep.
A few things to consider (for this is an issue I grapple with myself)…
It might be helpful to:
1. Concentrate on one thing at a time. Read one book at a time, read one article in it’s entirety on the internet at a time, complete one project before beginning another…
2. Breathe. Deeply. Breathe some more.
3. Unplug regularly. Take a day off from reading the newspaper, going on the internet, watching tv.
4. Spend time outdoors. There is just something about being outside and connecting with nature that restores some kind of balance to us humans.
5. Set an intention in the morning to accomplish one thing. JUST ONE THING. Enough with all of those endless to-do and goal lists. This only causes anxiety when you don’t get them all done.
6. Lower your expectations and you may find yourself pleasantly pleased and content rather than stressed and disappointed much of the time.
7. Slow down. Do things at a nice leisurely at-your-ease-pace, not frenetic dis-eased pace.
8. Do wake up and smell the coffee, the flowers, and love….
Yes, you are still a kick-a– extremely smart-magnificently smart person who is going to change the world- but….at a healthy pace, on your terms, not hurried.
At your-ease.
You can turn that computer off.
You can close that book or if you want to read- just read something purely for pleasure.
Put on that DVD from Netflix or watch a movie on tv or cable.
Better yet, interact and engage with loved ones, or
engage with God by being quiet and still-
and you will find-
that the world still moves on its axis
and you are still the magnificent human that you are
by doing nothing- and I MEAN NOTHING at all at this moment.
For YOU are enough
This moment is enough
JUST AS IT IS.
In Peace,
Debra
