I invite you today to consider doing something unusual for you. It can be an ordinary thing (like taking a different route home on your commute after work this afternoon) or something a little more risque (asking someone out if you are usually shy or trying something a little different in the bedroom tonight with your sweetie…).
Taking risks, being contrarian (meaning not always going along with what everyone else is doing or thinking), stretching yourself and doing things out of your comfort zone can be absolutely fantastic for you!
So many of us crave “security” but I believe security is an illusion. The truth is we are not guaranteed anything in life (except perhaps death and taxes or so the saying goes). We don’t know if we will have a tomorrow. And yet, so many of us live our lives like meek, timid little lambs: always doing the “right thing”: going to the right school, getting the right kind of job, marrying the right kind of spouse, buying the right kind of house in the right kind of neighborhood, driving the right kind of car, dressing the right way, going to the right restaurants, etc. etc. You get the idea…
You know what? We don’t have to do anything in a particular way (providing you are not breaking any laws). If you’ve always thought of yourself being a certain way, you can change it. We all have our “stories” and mental tapes that have been rattling around in our brains all our lives. Who says we can’t change the stories?
For example, I always thought I wasn’t very technical-and yet I have broken through my own self imposed barrier and I’m having a blast writing and developing The Warm Milk Journal and connecting with other kindred spirits on social media sites such as Facebook, Stumble!, Digg, and Twitter.
What are your barriers? What is it that you think you can’t do? What kind of a person do you not think you are?
If failure were not possible what would you do? Who would you be?
Can you imagine yourself:
- Moving to a new city?
- Dressing in a totally different way?
- Reaching out to others in a way that you are not used to?
- Chucking the dead end job for pursuing something that is more fulfilling for you?
- Taking up a totally new hobby or sport?
- Planning a trip or adventure to someplace you have always want to go “someday”?
What if someday never got here? Think of how much you would miss by sitting around waiting for “someday”.
I dare you to do something different today. Be someone different or doing something a little or a lot out of the ordinary- just for a little while anyway. See how taking a bit of a risk, breaking out of your box feels…
Go on, now…I DARE YOU!
Debra ; )
