“Insomnia is a gross feeder. It will nourish itself on any kind of thinking, including thinking about not thinking.”-Clifton Fadiman

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is not stress about not sleeping. Many posts here at The Warm Milk Journal encourage journal writing as a good technique to get us back to sleep. There are many benefits to journal writing. One main benefit that I can think of for those of us having trouble sleeping at night is that it does get our minds off the fact that we are not sleeping!

Depending on the kind of writing you are doing, you can be getting your mind on something else, or just doing some kind of mindless exercise (like doing the list exercises). If we are writing in our journals we are not lying in our beds tossing and turning and staring at our clocks and torturing ourselves about how awful we are going to feel in the morning….

Meditation is another tool that is suggested here a lot at the Warm Milk Journal. There are many forms of meditation. We can just focus our attention on our breathing and not think about anything in particular. We can choose a mantra, a peaceful word, a visualization, or meditate on anything we want to.

To think or not to think? I think that so long as we are not stressing about our insomnia many techniques will be a help to us. We will continue to explore ideas that calm our minds so that we can be centered, effective during our days, and sleep soundly at night.
